umbrella

i didn't even know this song existed until a close friend of mine (who is a nanny for 3 kids) was talking about it this summer. it was originally done by an artist called rihanna. very poppy. i wasn't that impressed. THEN a co-worker mentioned this video of mandy moore covering the song and i was interested to see what it was like. and this may make me completely lame, but i LOVED it! here it is:

confession

i recently attended city church in east nashville with my friend, marie. it is a sister church to the one that i am a member of, west end community. although they are both pca, there were quite a few differences. i love this. different, yet the same. one of the things that really moved me in this amazing church was their "confession" time.

first, confession was explained:
"Christians believe in the essential nature of confession. Since Jesus Christ has indeed died and risen from the dead, that which brings us shame and disgrace becomes an opportunity for his grace to become increasingly real to us. In Christ we are free to recognize who we really are and what it cost God to restore us."

second, the corporate confession & repentance was read aloud. honest words said in revealing truth:
"Lord of hosts, only the holy may stand in your holy place. The holy one has clean hands, a pure heart, a truthful soul, and honest lips. But we have stained hands, darkened hearts, restless souls, and deceptive lips because we attempt to justify ourselves. We bristle when corrected, we lash out in anger, we hold grudges, we are inconsistent in our desires and actions, we speak kindly while harboring resentments. In all these ways and more, we refuse to lift up our heads to the King of glory. In this moment, we lift up our heads to you, Jesus, as the holy one and the King of glory. Your life, death, and resurrection is our hope! Come in and reign with your clean hands, pure heart, truthful soul, and honest lips. We pray for our benefit and your kingdom's sake, in your name. Amen."

third, silent confession & repentance.

flight plan

decisions. a committed action. making them is something that i have always been able to do. clear moral answers govern many of them. a definite reality of consequences seen. easy to know what to do, even if it was hard to do. so, why all the confusion now? when did it become unclear? the answers. the actions. the reactions. all of a sudden the line has faded. now, each step has become uncertain. luckily, i'm not the one flying the plane. i'm not even in charge of the map. isn't that great?! so, chill out! relax! have a ginger ale.

Jeremiah 17: 7-9
7 "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.
8 He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."
9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

still learning

found this article a while back on relevantmagazine.com. i keep coming back to these written words every now and then and they are STILL saying something to me each time i read them. here is the article. hope you like it as much as i do:

A King and a Kingdom
Rachel Wegner

Wind and waves. Force and motion. Roots and trees. Creator and creation. One cannot exist without the first. It gives meaning, substance, depth and even sustenance to the other.

So many days, I focus on one half of that equation. I forget why and busy myself with things that kill my spirit. I forget Who and lose sight of the One I truly love. My meaning, substance, depth, sustenance ... every part of me is wrapped up in Him. The words echo in my head:

If there is a Kingdom, then there must be a King. The Kingdom implies the King.

In the midst of a result-driven culture, a convenience-addicted generation, a living, breathing disparity to reality, I struggle to find my roots—my cause; the One who began it all. I wonder who I have become. Piece by piece, He shows me who I really am. And I find myself in this place once again, where He quietly speaks to me and asks me to trust Him ... not just today, but every day. Not just with my future, but with my present.

Life in this Kingdom is upside down. Paradox is the basis for most things Godly . Think of the concept of grace, revealed in its very meaning: unmerited favor.
If we ever received what we truly deserved, we would burn for eternity in a lake of fire. Our hands are filthy with blood and dirt.

But we were washed. We were sanctified. We were justified. Set free by every drop of blood that poured from His body, every excruciating step He took toward that dreadful, beautiful hill, every belabored breath He took as He clung to life—the whole exchange was a perfect paradox.

And yet we take it so lightly.

I can scarcely express in words how vital it is to understand that we are not here to bide our time with games and competition. Comparison is a silent killer. Laziness is a comfortable friend. Complacency is a numbing drug. We cannot continue like this any longer, friends. Please, believe me when I say this:

Grace abounds. Take it while it might be found.
